This course is designed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of why the federal government enacted a new private sector privacy law, where the law applies, what type of information is subject to the law, how future provincial laws will apply, and how the law is administered. This course also contains a comprehensive, principle-by-principle review of the CSA Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information. The CSA Code is incorporated into the statute and establishes the underlying privacy protection rules. The course materials include downloadable (PDF) versions of the CSA Code and the legislation, as well as useful background information.

Global Objectives

• To provide participants with a general understanding of Canada's new private sector privacy law - the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (Part 1) - in order to understand the principles and dynamics of personal information protection, and to structure policies and practices in accordance with the law.
