Voice and Data Communications On-Line Curriculum
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)

This course provides an overview of the key technologies and operational issues encountered in DWDM optical networks. Students will acquire knowledge of the major DWDM components including optical amplifiers, DWDM multiplexers, Bragg gratings, and the fibre types used in DWDM networks. They will also understand the important non-linear effects encountered in a DWDM network including four wave mixing, self phase modulation, cross phase modulation and the stimulated scattering effects.

Prerequisites

Fibre Optic Technologies and Fibre Transmission Technologies

Global Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
  • Describe the components needed to perform Dense Wave Division Multiplexing on different types of fibre cabling.
  • Provide a general description of how DWDM optical networks work.

Target Audience

This course is intended for data networking professionals and marketing/ sales personnel who have some background or training in telecommunications.

Target Time

1.5 hours
